How to Replace a Cord Tilt Mechanism in a Wood, Faux Wood, or Venetian Blind

Video ID: 101006

Introduction

Cord tilt mechanisms are used in horizontal wood, faux wood, and Venetian blinds to rotate the slats on the blinds open and closed. They offer an alternative that can be used in place of a wand tilt mechanisms on the same type of blinds. Replacing a broken cord tilt mechanism is an easy repair.

A Note on Safety

Kids can strangle in blind cords. To make your blinds safer for kids, keep cords out of reach and secure cord and bead chain loops. To learn more, please visit our child safety guide.

Step 1 – Remove the tassels and end-stiffeners.

  • Remove the blind from the window before beginning this project.
  • If you have a cord tilt mechanism in your blind, remove the tassels from the bottom of the cords, and set them aside.
  • If your blind has end stiffeners, remove them from the headrail.

Step 2 – Remove the old tilt mechanism.

  • Slide the tilt rod free from the tilt mechanism, but do not take it all the way out of the headrail.
  • Remove the old tilt mechanism by rotating it slightly and then pulling it out of the headrail.

Step 3 – Install the new tilt mechanism.

  • Insert the tilt mechanism strings into the hole punch in the headrail.
  • Install the new tilt mechanism, making sure that it is firmly seated in the headrail.
  • Slide the tilt rod through the new tilt mechanism. Be sure to line up the tilt rod with the shape of the hole in the tilt mechanism.

Step 4 – Reattach the end stiffeners and tassels.

  • Replace the end stiffeners.
  • Replace the tassels by inserting the string through the tassel and tying a knot at the bottom of the string to keep the tassels attached.
  • Child safety recommendations state that all operating cords should be 40% the total length of the blind or less.
